4 Common Hiding Spots That Burglars Look First

When considering home security, it’s a good idea to take the time to consider places in your home that a burglar will likely search first.

Below we’ve outlined 4 common hiding spots that burglars will check first. These places are almost always easily accessible and are common spots or rooms within a home.

The master bedroom

Making a beeline straight to the master bedroom is all too common for a burglar. It’s the most likely room to have valuables such as clothes, jewelry and extra cash.

One of the most common hiding spots in a bedroom is under the mattress. Hiding things under the mattress is one of the oldest tricks in the book, so a burglar will likely check there for hidden items.

They may also look in the closet, going through your clothing pockets looking for cash and jewelry.

The bathroom

A bathroom is the most common place for people to store their medication. Criminals will want to make easy cash off of your belongings, so they’ll browse the medicine cabinet for prescription pills that they can sell.

Avoid using an old pill container as a hiding spot for valuables as that could actually make them an easy target.

The home office

Your office is where most of your expensive electronics will live, but criminals are also after paperwork such as passports, birth certificates and other sensitive information.

They could potentially commit identify fraud and open up bank accounts in your name if they’ve found enough information. It’s recommended to use locked drawers in your office or a safe to deter thieves and keep sensitive data safe.

The kitchen

Many people hide cash and jewels in the kitchen, thinking that a burglar will never look in there.

If you’re going to hide items the freezer for example, you will want to put it in with something that looks like it belongs there. This might mean hiding your jewelry in a bag that used to have frozen strawberries in it, rather than having an odd item such as a tea towel in the freezer.

Make sure that people who live in your home know where your valuables are so they won’t be thrown away in the trash if someone decides to do some spring cleaning.

The amount of time a burglar has in your home will determine which rooms they search. Updating your home security is all about deterring these people from entering your property in the first place.

Although that’s not always possible, it’s a good idea to plan for the event that someone does enter your home. You want to make it difficult for them to find or take anything valuable.
